Let the woo woo into the therapy room

Let the woo woo into the therapy room

Let's stop pretending the woo-woo gets left at the therapist's door. There’s room for both the woo-woo and the clinical, which makes for one great therapy space.

Yes, you are a registered allied health professional, but it’s also your spiritual side that brings a special warmth and comfort into the therapy space. The small rituals you offer help people feel safe and supported. Practices like aromatherapy or simply connecting with nature are gentle ways we can ground ourselves, much like the somatic techniques we use in trauma-informed care. Tools such as oracle cards can offer a soft entry point for reflection and meaning-making, especially when words are hard to find. You have a real gift for understanding the language of symbols, which helps you connect and communicate when words just aren’t enough.

When I first became a qualified creative psychotherapist, I felt determined to show that art therapy is a science. But the people I worked with gently reminded me that in moments of deep distress, we often reach for something beyond science—our spirituality, our heart, our soul, or whatever feels true for you. When I allowed myself to reconnect with this part of me, the light I had as a child, which had faded for a while, slowly returned. This experience helped me grow into a more present and compassionate therapist.
